Wood Blocks 101

Creating woodblock sets has always been a favorite project of mine.  I've made sets for Thanksgiving (Thankful), Christmas (Rejoice), gifts (Family) and now both my kid's rooms.  For my little guy's train themed room I used papers from Cosmo Cricket and Bella Blvd. to create this "All Aboard" set for him.  It's a wonderfully inexpensive way to add some decor to a room and an economic gift solution as well, think of the possibilities!

The next set is my daughter's name.  Using my Cricut (Serenade cartridge) I made a branch that I split between the last three blocks and added a little butterfly as well.
Each block started out as a scrap piece of 2 x 4 we had around from previous home-improvement projects.  We cut them down into three different sizes- 4, 5, & 6 inches long.  Next we sanded and routered the edges clean.  Paint in coordinating colors was applied to each block, for Katie's I used all white and the "All Aboard" I used various shades of brown and blue.  I applied patterned papers to the "front" of each block with modge podge (cutting my papers 1/2 inch bigger than the block measures in each direction), this allows me to sand the extra paper off giving it a worn look.  Lastly I applied my letters and embellishments.
